about Lambert chapel missionary baptist church

For God so loved the world he sent his only Son, Jesus, into the world to redeem and restore mankind. Through Christ’s death, resurrection and the grace of salvation, God’s covenant with man has been restored.  The salvation through Jesus is the fuel and power of our obedience to his commands, which instruct every part of our lives. The Scripture says, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Gal 2:20).

Our Church Covenant

Having been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God, to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior, and on the profession of faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, we do now, in the presence of God, angels and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another, as one body in Christ.

We engage therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to walk together in Christian love; strive for the advancement of this Church in knowledge, holiness and  comfort; to promote its prosperity and spirituality; to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline and doctrines; to contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the Church, the relief of the poor and the spread of the Gospel through all nations.

We also engage to maintain family and secret devotions; to religiously educate our children; to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintances; to walk circumspectly in the world; to be just in our dealings, faithful in our engagements and exemplary in our deportment; to avoid all tattling, backbiting and excessive anger; to abstain from the sale and use of intoxicating drinks as a beverage and to be zealous in our efforts to advance the kingdom of our Savior.

We further engage to watch over one another in brotherly love; to remember one another in prayer; to aid each other in sickness and distress; to cultivate Christian sympathy in feeling and courtesy in speech; to be slow to take offense, but always ready for reconciliation and mindful of the rules of our Savior to secure it without delay.

We more over engage, that when we remove from this place, we will as soon as possible, unite with some other church, where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s Word.

the history of Lambert chapel

As we begin the journey that will lead us through another one hundred and fifty years (and beyond!), this document serves as a brief history of and tribute to the pioneering past of Lambert Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. It is impossible to put in print all that has happened in the life of this wonderful congregation, but we can attempt to bring to light some of the highlights of our past.

Foremost of these highlights are the people of this church: our founders and their courage and conviction to provide a place of refuge and learning; the missionary women of this church, who demonstrated over and over again tireless efforts to support it with their time and finances; the pastors – only thirteen senior pastors in 150 years! – the associate pastors, the support staff — all who shared in the ministry to the members and beyond our walls; the thousands of members who are the “plow mules” in the ongoing day-to-day work that is necessary to achieve 150 years of ministry and service.

You are invited to share the history of Lambert Chapel Missionary Baptist Church through the pages of this document. We hope it will serve as a beacon for all the “bold adventures” that surely will follow. We are, after all, people of God, sharing a journey deeply rooted in faith, and choosing to live in hope.

Here is a timeline of the church history.

1866
The Beginning
Log Cabin

In the year of 1866 (the year after the Emancipation of slaves), a few white members of Brush Creek Baptist Church (established one mile up the road in 1824) helped the few Blacks (Brays’ and Wrenns’) in the area establish a church. One of the white members, Dan Lambert (b. 26 Apr 1835 - d. 8 Feb 1920), created the name “Lambert Chapel Baptist Church.”

A log cabin building was the place to worship, and Reverend Banks was the first pastor. (He and his wife are buried in the Mount Pleasant cemetery.) Mr. Alfred Bray, a white man, was the first secretary from 1851-1931.

1907
New Building
New Building

Before building a new framed building (one-half mile Southwest of present day Lambert), the church was under the leadership of Reverend Lamber Edwards, Reverend E. B. Curby, and Reverend E. M. Mason. The building burned down, and the fifth pastor, Reverend E. F. Hopkins of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, assisted in building another building.

The project began on Easter Monday in 1907 and was completed in time to have Sunday School in it the following Sunday.

Church Makeover

In 1916, Reverend A. T. Tuck of Goldston, North Carolina (the sixth and ninth pastor between the years of 1911 - 1926) contributed in painting the inside and outside, as well as adding seats for pews. The church at that time was part of the New Hope Missionary Baptist Association.

Reverend Tuck led a delegation of thirteen churches from the western district of the association through a letter to the parent association to form the Deep River Missionary Baptist Association. Deep River celebrated it’s one hundred year history on October 8, 2016 at First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Sanford, NC.

Reverend James S. Stewart (New Hill, NC) replaced Reverend Tuck before filling a position in the New Hope Association.

He was followed by Reverend O. P. Foster (Liberty, NC), who helped build the ministers’ sitting area behind the pulpit.

With the aid of the tenth pastor (1932 – 1940), Reverend A. F. McCleave (Siler City, NC), the church was re-roofed and the interior was painted.

Also electrical lights and a new heating system were installed, as well as adding brick veneer, paneling, carpeted, and a water fountain.

By the year of 1976, Reverend L. B. Cameron became Lambert’s twelfth ordained minister. Under his care, the youth became active in the church, forming the first youth choir (The Little Stars). Also, Vacation Bible School and Christian Education were started.

The following improvements were done: a stationary sign with the church’s and pastor’s names (donated by Mr. & Mrs. John Scotton in memory of Mrs. Scotton’s mother, Mrs. Ida Graves Spinks), air conditioner installed, upstairs converted into classrooms, floor carpeted, Pastor’s Study was renovated, basement/kitchen added, and parking area improved.

Welcome Reverend Leake

On January 2, Reverend Kevin Leake became the 14th Pastor of Lambert Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. He immediately went to work on the Pastoral task at hand utilizing the 5-year strategic plans with adjustments as his guide and working on unfinished business. He started by developing a theme for the entire first Year of his ministry (Capturing the Hearts of God’s People). He centered his preaching and teaching around that theme. He met with the Board of Deacons on a regular basis to establish a working relationship and set guidelines which would allow them to work together for the good of the church. He developed the church’s first logo which has been used extensively to market and brand the church and its mission. He initiated and prepares his sermons utilizing various techniques of delivery including audiovisual technology, making sure there was always an introduction, a message in the body of the sermon, with points of application, and summary recap of the message providing a road map for our weekly understanding and application. He maximized the use of Zoom technology, Facebook, and YouTube streaming, through leading the church to purchase and update sound and video
